Banyan Bar & Kitchen York | Review

Last week I was contacted via Twitter and asked if I would be interested in reviewing a newly refurbished restaurant in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Up until this point I had never been contacted for anything as a result of having this tiny little blog and I was rather giddy to have been invited to my first event. I received the invite on Tuesday to attend the exclusive pre-launch event on the Wednesday and I was slightly disheartened as it would be difficult making the hours drive North after work mid-week. However I decided I needed to seize the opportunity and make the trip and maybe just be a tad tired for work the next day.
I was very kindly provided with a complimentary two course meal with drinks for myself and a guest, for which I invited my friend Milly to enjoy with me. To cut a long story short, on setting off in the car I was a tad anxious... this resulted in me inputting the wrong directions into the sat nav! It was only when we arrived into York city centre at 8:20pm, a good hours drive later and ten minutes before our table was booked for the Harrogate branch that it clicked! I had chosen directions for the York Banyan! I immediately called the Harrogate Banyan to explain what an idiot I had been, to which Jason their area manager very kindly offered for us to enjoy our meal at the York site. We accepted, not wanting a totally wasted journey and headed into the centre to get parked and find the restaurant. As you can imagine I was and still am terribly annoyed with myself on missing out on the pre-launch, seeing the refurb and tasting their new menu, however I did manage to enjoy some of what York Banyan had to offer.

As I was a little stressed and honestly upset with my mistake, on arriving, my appetite had taken a nose dive and Milly was under the weather so we opted not to take advantage of the two course and just have a main. The staff at York Banyan Bar & Kitchen were nothing short of delightful. We were greeted by a lovely waitress and two male bar staff who jokedly referred to me as 'the girl in the wrong city'. On choosing our seats, the lovely waitress (whose name I wish I had taken) came to take our drink orders. It was clear from the menu that the Banyan had an array of tasty sounding cocktails to enjoy starting from around £6.50. We both opted for Mocktails (non-alcoholic) as it was a school night. Milly chose the 'Green & Clean' £3.75 a minty fresh delight made up of mint, apple and kiwi and I chose the 'Very Berry' £3.75 made of cranberry, apple, raspberry, strawberry, mint and lime. For our mains we both ordered a salad, Milly chose the Parma ham, buffalo mozzarella, avocado, sun dried tomatoes, baby spinach and rocket with balsamic vinaigrette salad, and requested a poached egg to be served with it which arrived perfectly cooked £10.50. I was drawn in by the Halloumi, butternut squash, feta cheese, crisp leaves, olives and mixed peppers with garlic and herb dressing £10.25, both were served with a toasted pitta. Milly loved her main and in fact so did I, I must admit on arrival I did slightly regret not going for Milly's option as I much prefer spinach and rocket in my salad as opposed to the lettuce that arrived with mine, but other than that both meals were super tasty! We also ordered a side of sweet potato fries served with a yummy sour cream dip £3.90.

York Banyan Bar & Kitchen had a great atmosphere, it had a cool, young vibe and comprised of brown leather booths and colour change lighting. Over all, despite the stress of the journey we enjoyed our meal and the service we received. I would definitely return for a meal the next time I visit York and on having my usual appetite would most likely test out some of the meatier and naughtier offerings from their menu as well as explore more of their cocktail menu. Banyan also offer cocktail master classes for yourself and friends, taught by their self titled and award winning mixologists! See their cocktail menu for more details on how to book your own master class! I would like to thank Banyan for having us and for the lovely meal and service and hopefully one day I will make it to the Harrogate branch to experience their new refurb.
You can find out more about Banyan Bar & Kitchen York over on their website! They also have branches in Harrogate, Leeds and Manchester.
